Moving from one Bratislava address to another does not produce one universal change-of-address procedure. Bratislava has 17 city districts, while residence records, municipal waste, regulated parking and school catchments are handled by different authorities. Start by identifying what kind of address has changed and which services you actually use.
First identify your Bratislava city district
Bratislava is divided into 17 self-governing city districts (mestské časti). Each has its own mayor, council and local office. The district is therefore more than a neighbourhood name: it determines which local office handles matters such as residence registration for Slovak citizens and may affect school catchments and district services.
Do not rely only on the name commonly used for the area. Check the full street address against the city’s district list or the relevant district website. For example, Ružinov includes the cadastral areas of Ružinov, Trnávka and Nivy, while Nové Mesto includes Nové Mesto and Vinohrady. Separate your residence address from your correspondence address
A new home, an officially registered residence and a correspondence address are not automatically the same thing.
- Actual home address: where you are currently living.
- Registered residence: the address recorded under the rules applicable to your nationality and residence status.
- Correspondence address: an address an organisation uses for letters or notices. Updating this does not, by itself, change an official residence record.
If you are renting and have only changed where you receive mail, do not assume that your registered residence, parking eligibility or school catchment has changed. Update each organisation separately and ask whether it needs your registered address, your actual accommodation address or only a mailing address.
Slovak citizens registering permanent residence
For Slovak citizens, Bratislava’s permanent-residence registration offices are located at the local offices of the respective city districts. When a citizen registers a new permanent residence within Slovakia, the new registration office arranges removal from the previous address; a separate visit to the old office is not required. Foreign nationals with registered residence
Foreign nationals should not assume that the city-district registration procedure for Slovak citizens replaces their duties to the Foreign Police. The Ministry of Interior states that a third-country national with granted residence must report a change of place of residence to the police department within five working days of the change.
EU citizens have a separate procedure. The Ministry’s official guidance says that a change in the permanent-residence address must be reported in person to the Foreign Police department responsible for the new address. An EU citizen whose residence document no longer matches the facts must apply for a new document within ten working days. Check municipal waste administration
The municipal waste fee is administered by the City of Bratislava, not simply transferred between city-district offices. According to the city’s current waste-fee guidance, the obligation can arise when a person is entitled to use or actually uses property in Bratislava. Facts affecting the creation, alteration or termination of that obligation must be reported within 30 days.
This does not mean every apartment tenant should independently open a second waste account. Apartment buildings may have arrangements involving an owner, landlord or building manager. Before submitting anything, ask who is recorded as the payer for the old and new properties. If you are the registered payer, use the city’s notification form and retain the submission confirmation.

Review PAAS parking cards immediately
A PAAS resident parking card is linked to permanent residence in a regulated zone, not merely to renting or owning an apartment there. PAAS verifies permanent residence and the applicant’s relationship to the vehicle through public registers or supporting documents.
A change of permanent residence can end the validity of a parking card, including after a move within the same building. Do not continue relying on the old card without checking your PAAS account. Cancel or replace the affected card as instructed, then apply for the appropriate card for the new zone if eligible. If the new home is outside your previous zone, the streets covered by your resident entitlement may also change.
Residents without permanent residence at the new apartment generally cannot obtain a resident card for that zone. Recheck school and family services
A move can place a child in a different school district. Bratislava provides a map of school catchment areas intended to show which catchment school corresponds to an address. District rules and available map coverage should still be confirmed with the relevant city district or school.
If your child already attends a school or kindergarten, contact the institution rather than assuming the address update will be automatic. Ask whether the move affects its records, catchment status, application, waiting list, school club, meal account or correspondence.
Also contact the new district if your household uses locally administered social care, senior services, community programmes or benefits tied to district residence. Bratislava and its districts have divided responsibilities, and individual programmes can apply their own eligibility rules.
Proof to keep after the move
- Proof of the new accommodation, such as a lease, ownership record or owner’s declaration.
- Confirmation of residence registration or the Foreign Police submission.
- Any application or receipt for a replacement residence document.
- Waste-fee forms, electronic receipts and communication with the owner or building manager.
- PAAS cancellation, refund and new-card confirmations.
- Written confirmation that a school, kindergarten or district service updated its records.
- A list of organisations that received only a correspondence-address update.
Keep the old and new address, effective move date and submission reference together. This makes it easier to resolve a later parking, waste-fee or document-delivery discrepancy.
