Train travel in Slovakia is useful for journeys between major cities, regional centres and many smaller towns. The system is manageable once you understand one important point: the company running the train determines which tickets, reservations and commercial conditions apply.

Choosing a train and operator

Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) manages the national railway infrastructure. It does not normally sell passenger tickets. Most domestic passenger services are operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK), while private operators such as RegioJet run selected routes.

Search results may show trains from more than one operator. Before paying, check:

  • the operator named beside the connection;
  • whether the journey uses one train or requires a transfer;
  • whether all segments are covered by one booking;
  • whether a seat reservation is included, optional or compulsory;
  • whether your discount is accepted by that operator.

Do not assume that a ZSSK ticket is valid on a RegioJet service, or vice versa. Buy from the operator running the train unless the booking system explicitly confirms that the ticket covers the complete journey.

Trains can also be combined with local public transport. For travel within and around the capital, see LovinSK’s guide to the Bratislava travel card and public transport tickets. For ideas beyond the main rail corridors, compare these family-friendly day trips and routes in Slovakia.

Where and when to buy tickets

ZSSK tickets are available through its website, mobile application and staffed ticket offices. Depending on the journey and product, other channels may include ticket machines, SMS tickets or the FAIRTIQ check-in/check-out application. These channels do not all sell the same products: for example, ZSSK states that FAIRTIQ cannot be used for seat, bicycle, couchette or sleeping-car reservations.

For a straightforward journey, the safest process is:

  1. Search using the exact departure and destination stations.
  2. Check the date, departure time, train number and operator.
  3. Select the correct passenger category and travel class.
  4. Add any required seat or bicycle reservation.
  5. Read the cancellation conditions before paying.
  6. Keep the ticket available offline and carry the document used to obtain a discount.

Buy before boarding whenever possible. ZSSK permits some onboard purchases, but its onboard ticket guidance warns that a surcharge may apply. The rules can depend on whether the boarding station had an open ticket office or working sales facility, so inform the conductor promptly rather than waiting for an inspection.

RegioJet uses its own website, application, sales points and booking conditions. Its FAQ says that an unpaid reservation cannot simply be held and paid onboard. The company also advertises cancellation of eligible online tickets up to a stated cutoff before departure, but the precise conditions depend on the fare. Check the cancellation information displayed for your ticket rather than treating one rule as universal.

Seat and bicycle reservations

Situation What to check
Regional ZSSK train A seat reservation may be unavailable or unnecessary.
Long-distance ZSSK train Check whether the selected service requires or merely offers reservations.
RegioJet train The booking normally assigns or lets you select a seat; confirm it on the ticket.
Bicycle Check the specific train for bicycle acceptance and whether a space reservation is compulsory.
Night train Book the required seat, couchette or sleeping berth, not only the basic fare.

A ticket and a reservation serve different purposes. The ticket pays for transport; the reservation assigns a particular seat, berth or bicycle space. ZSSK’s reservation guidance allows seat reservations on many services but makes bicycle-space reservations compulsory on specified train categories.

Bicycle capacity is limited and varies by train. ZSSK says bicycles or e-bikes can be carried on many of its services, but the method may range from keeping the bicycle in a designated area to placing it in a mobile luggage section. Consult its current bicycle instructions for the selected connection and reserve early for a long-distance journey.

Do not rely only on a bicycle symbol in a general timetable. Confirm that your exact departure has available bicycle spaces and that your booking contains both the passenger ticket and any required bicycle document.

Checking eligibility for travel discounts

ZSSK offers passenger categories and discount products for groups including children, students and seniors. Some passengers may also qualify for Slovakia’s state-supported zero-fare scheme. Eligibility is not based simply on appearing young, being enrolled somewhere or having reached retirement age.

The zero-fare programme has registration, identification and ticketing requirements. A qualifying passenger may still need to register with ZSSK, obtain the relevant customer entitlement and collect a zero-fare ticket for the specific train. Capacity restrictions or supplements can apply on some services.

Before selecting any reduced fare, verify:

  • the required age, study or pension status;
  • whether Slovak or foreign residents can qualify under the stated conditions;
  • which identity, student or customer card must be carried;
  • whether prior registration is necessary;
  • whether a train-specific ticket or supplement is still required;
  • whether the operator running the train recognises the discount.

RegioJet has a separate tariff and discount system. A ZSSK registration or state-supported entitlement does not automatically create the same fare on a privately operated service.

Delays, missed connections and refunds

If a train is delayed, first preserve evidence: keep the ticket, note the train number and photograph or screenshot the delay information. Ask the operator’s staff about continuation, rerouting or ticket endorsement before buying a replacement.

The distinction between one through-ticket and separate bookings matters. Under the EU’s rail passenger rights guidance, passengers facing an expected arrival delay of at least 60 minutes may have rights to reimbursement or rerouting, and those who continue may qualify for compensation. Exceptions can apply, including where the passenger knew about the delay before buying or where extraordinary circumstances caused it.

For a missed connection, ask these questions:

  1. Were both trains sold as one journey or through-ticket?
  2. Are both services operated under the same transport contract?
  3. Has railway staff authorised another train or route?
  4. What evidence and claim form does the operator require?

Separate tickets, especially tickets from different operators, can leave you with weaker protection if the first service is late. Allow a larger transfer margin when combining independent bookings.

ZSSK publishes separate domestic compensation and refund guidance. RegioJet handles claims under its own conditions and advertised delay guarantee. Submit the claim to the company that issued or operated the affected service, using the ticket number and requested proof.

FAQ

Can I board any train with a ticket for the same route?

No. Check the operator, train restrictions, travel date and validity printed in the ticket conditions. A ticket issued for one operator or a train-specific fare may not be accepted on another service.

Must I print an electronic train ticket?

Follow the instructions on the ticket. Many electronic tickets can be shown on a phone, but the barcode must be readable. Save it offline and carry any identification or discount document linked to the booking.

Does a free or discounted ticket guarantee a seat?

No. A fare entitlement and a seat reservation are separate. Check whether the train requires a reservation and obtain one when you need a guaranteed seat.

What should I do if my train is cancelled?

Contact the operating company before making alternative arrangements. Ask whether it will reroute you, accept the ticket on another service or refund the unused journey, and retain all tickets and receipts.
