Changing address in Slovakia is not a single administrative procedure. Foreign Police records, insurance databases, vehicle documents and private contracts may each need a separate update. Start with your immigration status, meet any applicable deadline, and then work through the rest of this checklist.
First identify your residence status
Your first step depends on the document or status under which you live in Slovakia.
| Your situation | First action | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Non-EU citizen with temporary, permanent or tolerated residence | Notify the competent Foreign Police department and apply for a replacement residence card | Within 5 business days |
| EU citizen with a residence document | Report the new address to the Foreign Police department responsible for the new address and request a new document if its details are no longer correct | Within 10 business days |
| Family member of an EU citizen with a residence card | Contact the Foreign Police and request an updated card | Within 10 business days |
| Foreign resident without an address printed on a Slovak residence document | Confirm the reporting requirement with the Foreign Police; other institutions may still require separate updates | Check before moving |
The deadlines above are confirmed by the IOM Migration Information Centre. They are short, so do not wait for your landlord, employer or insurer to update another database first.
Report the new address and replace your residence document
Apply through the Foreign Police department competent for your new address. The IOM guidance says applicants generally need:
- the application form;
- a valid passport;
- proof of accommodation issued or signed no more than 90 days earlier; and
- the administrative fee for issuing and delivering the new card.
Accepted accommodation evidence can include proof that you own the property, a tenancy agreement, an accommodation declaration or confirmation from an accommodation facility. Depending on the document, signatures may need notarisation. Verify the exact form before your appointment.
Current IOM guidance lists card issuance and delivery fees of €10 within 30 days or €39 within two business days. Exemptions may apply in individual cases. EU citizens applying for an updated EU residence card are also asked for a current colour photograph measuring 3 × 3.5 cm under the Ministry of Interior guidance.
An online application may be possible if you still hold a valid, activated residence card. Otherwise, book the appropriate document appointment and attend in person. See LovinSK’s Foreign Police office list before choosing a department.
Update health and social-insurance details
Health insurance
A foreign insured person should notify their Slovak health insurer of a change of permanent residence within eight days. The rule is stated in the VšZP notification guidance; check your own insurer’s form and submission channels.
Also update any separate correspondence address, telephone number or email held by the insurer. This reduces the risk of missing notices, annual-settlement correspondence or a replacement insurance card. LovinSK’s health insurance guide explains the wider insurance system.
Social Insurance Agency
Ordinary registered permanent or temporary residence data is generally obtained by Sociálna poisťovňa from the Register of Natural Persons. However, special circumstances still require action. Pension recipients must report a change in the address where they actually stay within eight days if that address differs from the registered residence. A person on electronic sick leave must report a change in the address of treatment without delay.
If you receive a benefit, are self-employed or have an open case, check your Sociálna poisťovňa account or contact the relevant branch rather than assuming every address field updates automatically.
Tell your employer and review tax records
Give your employer the new address promptly. Payroll, employment records, benefit documents and annual tax paperwork may use information supplied directly by you even where a public register also contains the change.
If you are individually registered with the Slovak tax authority, review the address in your Financial Administration profile. The Financial Administration guidance states that changes to information supplied during registration, including permanent residence, must generally be reported within 30 days. A separate notification may not be required when another authorised register transfers the change automatically, so check your registration type rather than submitting duplicate notices.
This is especially relevant to sole traders, landlords and other people holding a Slovak tax identification number. For related obligations, see LovinSK’s guide to Slovak tax returns for foreign employees.
Update banks and electronic services
- Change both your residential and correspondence address with each bank, lender and investment provider.
- Check whether the provider requires the new residence card, passport, accommodation evidence or an in-person identity check.
- Review payment cards and statements that may be sent by post.
- Update delivery addresses saved in online shops and payment applications.
- Check your Slovak electronic mailbox and contact details. Government messages are not redirected by ordinary postal forwarding.
Keep access to your electronic mailbox during the move. LovinSK explains activation and message handling in its guide to Slovakia’s electronic government mailbox.
Change vehicle and driving-related records
If you are recorded as the holder of a vehicle, report a change in your residence or registered address to the traffic inspectorate and request replacement registration documents within 30 days. This deadline is confirmed by the Ministry of Interior vehicle guidance.
Also notify your compulsory motor insurance and any comprehensive insurer. Premiums, assistance coverage and correspondence may depend on the recorded address. Do not assume that changing the vehicle record automatically updates the insurer.
For a Slovak driving licence, check whether the document or licensing record contains address data that has become inaccurate. Requirements can differ for Slovak-issued and foreign-issued licences, so confirm directly with the document department if unsure.
Contact schools, doctors and family services
- Tell your child’s school or preschool and update emergency contacts and authorised collection details.
- If the move affects the school catchment area, ask the municipality and school whether any further procedure is needed. Moving does not by itself guarantee a place at a different school.
- Give your general practitioner, paediatrician, dentist and specialists the new contact address.
- Update any labour-office, social-benefit or municipal records relevant to your household.
- For pets, check the address held in the animal’s identification register and by the municipality where local dog registration applies.
Transfer utilities and insurance policies
Agree meter readings and the handover date with the landlord or owner. Contact electricity, gas, water, internet and television providers according to the name on each contract. A move may require termination, transfer or a completely new agreement.
Update household, contents and liability insurance. Coverage tied to the old property may not automatically follow you. Keep photographs of meter readings, handover protocols and confirmation that final invoices were settled.
Arrange mail forwarding
Slovenská pošta offers temporary mail forwarding to a new address. Treat it as a backup, not a substitute for notifying important senders. Some items may be marked as non-forwardable, and electronic government messages are handled separately.
Leave your name clearly displayed on the new mailbox and doorbell. Slovak addresses often depend on both the building’s registration number and orientation number, so copy the exact address format from your accommodation document.
Final moving-address checklist
- Within 5 or 10 business days: notify the Foreign Police and request an updated residence card where required.
- Within 8 days: notify your health insurer; pension recipients should update a separate actual-stay address with Sociálna poisťovňa.
- Within 30 days: update vehicle records and any tax registration that is not updated automatically.
- Notify your employer, bank, insurers, school, doctors and benefit administrators.
- Transfer or close utilities and communications contracts.
- Update online accounts, delivery addresses and emergency contacts.
- Arrange postal forwarding and monitor both physical and electronic mail.
- Keep copies of submissions, receipts and replacement-document applications.
Frequently asked questions
Does my landlord report my permanent move for me?
Do not rely on the landlord’s accommodation reporting to satisfy your own residence-document obligations. Foreign residents must complete the procedure applicable to their status.
Must I get a new residence card?
Generally yes if the address or other information shown on the card is no longer correct. The deadline is normally five business days for non-EU residents and ten business days for EU citizens and their family members.
Does postal forwarding update government records?
No. Mail forwarding only concerns eligible postal items. It does not change Foreign Police, insurance, tax, vehicle, bank or electronic-mailbox records.
