A Bratislava resident parking permit is an electronic parking entitlement issued through the city’s regulated parking system, known as PAAS. Eligibility depends mainly on your registered permanent residence, the address’s parking zone and your documented relationship to the vehicle—not simply on renting or owning a home in Bratislava.

First check whether your address is in a regulated PAAS zone

Resident permits apply to a specific regulated zone associated with your permanent-residence address. They do not provide unrestricted parking throughout Bratislava.

  1. Open the official PAAS zone map.
  2. Find your street and building address.
  3. Check whether regulation is already active, rather than merely planned.
  4. Note the zone code and any local operating rules.

Bratislava introduces regulated parking gradually, so rules can differ by neighbourhood and may change as new areas join the system. Signs on the street remain important: they identify regulated sections, operating times and where particular permits apply.

If you are still deciding where to live, LovinSK’s overview of Bratislava’s districts provides useful neighbourhood context. Drivers looking for payment apps and general short-term parking information can instead consult our guide to smart parking in Slovakia.

Check the residence requirement

Under the official PAAS eligibility rules, a standard resident parking permit is linked to three things:

  • your registered permanent residence (trvalý pobyt);
  • the apartment or house at which that residence is registered; and
  • a specific motor vehicle.

Living at an address under a rental agreement is not enough by itself. A tenant normally needs registered permanent residence at that address. This distinction is particularly important for foreign residents whose lease states where they live but whose officially registered address may be elsewhere.

If you are arranging your housing status, see LovinSK’s guide to renting an apartment in Slovakia. Questions about immigration residence status should be treated separately from PAAS eligibility; the parking system checks the address relationship required by its own rules.

Check your relationship to the vehicle

You must also fall within one of the vehicle-use categories accepted by PAAS. The city currently recognizes a resident who:

  • is the registered holder of the vehicle;
  • is married to the registered holder;
  • has the vehicle registered to their sole-trader business;
  • uses an employer’s vehicle for private purposes;
  • uses a company vehicle privately as a member of that company’s governing or corporate body; or
  • has a paid vehicle-use or rental agreement with a legal entity whose principal business is vehicle rental.

A car informally borrowed from a friend or relative does not normally establish the required relationship. PAAS states that the registered holder would need to be changed unless another accepted category applies.

Foreign registration plates are not automatically excluded. For example, PAAS expressly allows a foreign-plated company car when the employer permits private use and the applicant provides the relevant agreement. Expect manual document review whenever Slovak electronic registers cannot confirm the vehicle information.

Prepare the required documents

PAAS checks applications against electronic registers where possible. The exact upload request therefore depends on which facts the system can verify automatically.

Situation What to have ready
You are the vehicle holder Identity document and vehicle registration documents, particularly if the data cannot be retrieved electronically
Your spouse is the holder Documents allowing PAAS to verify the marriage and vehicle relationship if automatic verification fails
You use an employer’s car privately Employment-related agreement or employer confirmation expressly allowing private use
You use a company car as a company officer or member Evidence of your company role and permission to use the vehicle privately
You have a long-term rental car A paid rental or use agreement with an eligible vehicle-rental company, covering the permit period
The system cannot verify your address or identity Your residence or identity document and any additional evidence requested by PAAS

Do not upload extra documents speculatively. Submit the application first and follow the request shown in your PAAS account. Applications that cannot be verified through the account may have to be completed at a PAAS client centre.

How to apply for a resident parking permit

  1. Go to the official PAAS registration page and create a ParkDots account using your email address and a password.
  2. Confirm your email address.
  3. Complete identity verification and enter your personal details.
  4. Select the resident parking permit and the relevant address or zone.
  5. Enter the vehicle registration number carefully, including the country information where requested.
  6. Upload any documents requested because automatic verification was unsuccessful.
  7. Wait for approval. A PAAS employee manually reviews applications requiring supporting evidence.
  8. Pay only after the application is approved. The official PAAS parking manual permits online payment through the payment gateway or bank transfer, as well as card or cash payment at a client centre.
  9. Check that the permit is active before relying on it.

The permit is electronic and linked to the vehicle registration number. PAAS does not issue a physical card to display in the car. Registration of the vehicle in the permit system is completed only after PAAS receives the required payment.

Fees, validity and renewal

The standard annual resident-permit prices published by PAAS are based on the number of resident permits assigned to one apartment:

Permit for the apartment Annual fee
First vehicle €39
Second vehicle €150
Third vehicle €500

A maximum of three standard resident permits may be issued for one apartment. Special areas, including certain central Bratislava microzones, may have more restrictive permit limits, so always check your zone page before applying.

Renewal is assessed under the same eligibility rules as a new application. PAAS accounts can offer automatic renewal, but this generates a renewal request rather than guaranteeing approval regardless of changed circumstances. Recheck your address, vehicle relationship and payment status when the current permit approaches expiry.

Visitor parking options for residents

A household in a regulated zone may apply for one free visitor parking card. According to the current PAAS resident information, it provides:

  • 100 hours per year when the apartment also has a resident parking permit;
  • 200 hours per year when the apartment has no resident parking permit; or
  • 750 hours per year for an eligible person with a severe disability who requires personal assistance or care.

The visitor card is not a physical permit and does not make every visitor’s parking automatic. The resident must activate parking through a supported application by entering the visitor’s registration number, the parking-section code and the intended parking time. Credit is deducted by the minute.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I rent my Bratislava apartment?

Yes, but a lease alone does not establish eligibility. For a standard resident permit, you generally need registered permanent residence at the apartment and an accepted relationship to the vehicle.

Can I use a car registered abroad?

A foreign plate is not necessarily a barrier, but PAAS may be unable to verify it automatically. You must still prove an accepted relationship to the vehicle. PAAS specifically confirms that a foreign-plated employer vehicle may qualify when private use is documented.

Does the resident permit work everywhere in Bratislava?

No. It normally covers parking within the regulated zone associated with your permanent-residence address. Other zones may require a parking payment or a separate entitlement.

Can I choose a later start date?

Yes. The PAAS parking manual states that an applicant may select a start date no later than the 30th day after submitting the application.

What should I do if online verification fails?

Upload the requested evidence through your account. If PAAS cannot complete verification there, the official manual requires the application to be handled personally at a client centre. Use the current PAAS contact page to confirm locations and opening arrangements before visiting.
