Foreign nationality does not by itself exclude you from Bratislava public transport discounts. Eligibility within the Integrated Transport System in the Bratislava Region (IDS BK) normally depends on your age, student status, or an officially recognized severe disability. The important step is proving that entitlement in an accepted form before buying a discounted travel pass.
Who qualifies for reduced fares?
| Passenger | Main eligibility rule | Typical proof |
|---|---|---|
| Child or young person | From age 6 until the day before turning 18 | Photo identity document or a personalized transport card |
| School pupil | Pupil at a qualifying primary or secondary school | Accepted school card, ISIC, or recent school confirmation |
| University student | Full-time study, generally until the day before turning 26 | Accepted ISIC or confirmation of enrolment |
| Senior | From age 63 | Photo identity document |
| SeniorPass user | From age 70 | Registered SeniorPass on an accepted carrier |
| Person with a severe disability | Holder of an accepted Slovak ŤZP or ŤZP-S entitlement | Slovak disability card, qualifying decision, or identity document recording the entitlement |
IDS BK states that discounted fares are generally 50% of the basic fare. Discounted season passes for children and young people aged 6 to under 18 receive a different reduction, so check the current price list rather than assuming that every reduced pass costs exactly half price.
Children under six are covered by separate free-transport rules. A family relationship or residence in Bratislava does not, on its own, create a general family discount. Each passenger must qualify under an applicable category.
Students at Slovak schools
Pupils and students studying in Slovakia may prove eligibility with a valid ISIC or written confirmation of school attendance. According to the IDS BK reduced-fare rules, written confirmation must apply to the relevant school year and be no more than 30 days old.
University students must normally be studying full-time and remain under 26. A valid ISIC can prove entitlement when using single-journey or day tickets. To load a season pass onto a chip-enabled ISIC, however, the card must have its transport function activated and the discount must be prolonged for the current academic year. DPB also instructs first-time users to have an eligible ISIC registered in the transport system at a carrier sales point.
Students enrolled outside Slovakia
Students at foreign schools may qualify if their study is considered equivalent to eligible full-time study in Slovakia. A valid international ISIC is an accepted form of evidence under the published IDS BK rules.
Without an accepted ISIC, the carrier may require an officially translated confirmation of enrolment and a Slovak Ministry of Education decision recognizing the study as equivalent. The recognition decision is not required for institutions included on the ministry’s applicable list of recognized universities in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland. Because this route depends on the institution and academic year, check the evidence with DPB before ordering a personalized card.
Seniors
Passengers aged 63 or over automatically qualify for reduced fares and may prove their age with a valid photo identity document. This age-based rule is relevant to foreign residents because it is not presented as being restricted by Slovak nationality or Bratislava permanent residence.
From age 70, a passenger can obtain a SeniorPass IDS BK: a network-wide 365-day pass costing €0, except for zone 190. The pass itself is free, although obtaining a new physical chip card can involve an issuance fee. A passenger aged 70 or over who has no SeniorPass can still use the ordinary senior reduced fare.
A former category for pension recipients aged 60 to under 63 closed to new applicants on 1 June 2025. Only passengers whose entitlement was registered by 31 May 2025 retain that transitional discount. New applicants in this age group must wait until they qualify under the age-63 rule unless another discount category applies.
Passengers with severe disabilities
IDS BK accepts a Slovak ŤZP or ŤZP-S card, the original Slovak authority decision awarding that card, or an identity document containing the relevant severe-disability or companion information. The published rules do not establish that every foreign disability card is automatically accepted. Ask IDS BK or DPB to confirm your particular document before relying on a reduced ticket.
Documents to prepare
For a personalized DPB contactless chip card, prepare:
- Identity document: use a valid document showing your identity and date of birth.
- Proof of entitlement: for example, an accepted ISIC, recent school confirmation, or Slovak ŤZP documentation.
- Current photograph: DPB specifies 3.5 × 3 cm for in-person applications. Selected sales offices can take the photograph free of charge.
- Child’s supporting document: when a child has no identity document, DPB accepts a copy of the birth certificate or health-insurance card together with the representative’s identity document.
The general IDS BK chip-card rules also require personal details including the passenger’s name, address, and date of birth. Bring original evidence unless the relevant carrier expressly accepts a copy or online scan.
Where and how to register
- Choose the fare category. Identify whether the entitlement is based on age, study, or severe disability.
- Choose a ticket carrier. Season tickets can be held in the IDS BK mobile application, on a carrier-issued contactless chip card, or on certain activated school ISIC cards.
- Submit the evidence. Apply at a DPB sales office or use DPB’s online chip-card application where available. Online applicants must upload a suitable photograph and the requested supporting documents.
- Wait for approval before buying a reduced pass. Creating an application or account is not the same as having a verified discount entitlement.
- Buy the correct ticket or pass. Once the category is active, purchase the reduced product for the required zones and period.
DPB lists chip-card sales and online application options on its contactless card page. As checked on 14 June 2026, a DPB-issued chip card costs €7. Online cards can be collected from a selected sales point or mailed to an address within Slovakia.
If you are still arranging residence documents or other local administration, LovinSK’s guides to Slovak residence for non-EU citizens and Bratislava’s districts provide useful background.
Choosing a travel pass
For regular travel, an electronic season ticket, commonly called an električenka, is usually the relevant product. IDS BK sells season tickets through its mobile application, carrier sales offices, its online shop, and selected ticket machines.
For travel only within Bratislava, choose zones 100 and 101; IDS BK sells these two city zones together. If you commute from outside the city, include every zone through which your route passes, even where the vehicle does not stop. The online shop and app can calculate the required zones from a route.
Before committing to a long pass, compare your expected travel frequency with single-journey and day tickets. The existing LovinSK guide to using Bratislava travel and transport cards explains the broader ticketing system.
Renewals and ticket inspections
A discount entitlement and a travel pass can have different expiry dates. Students should renew or prolong their student entitlement for each school or academic year. DPB states that university-student eligibility normally ends on 30 September; for final-year students it may end at the final examination and no later than 31 August of that year.
The SeniorPass lasts 365 days. IDS BK says a SeniorPass stored on a chip card can be extended at carrier sales points, ticket machines, and ticket validators. A renewed entitlement does not excuse you from checking that the actual pass is valid for the date and zones of travel.
During an inspection, present the valid ticket or its carrier and the evidence required for your reduced fare. A discount that has expired, has not been activated, or belongs to another person may leave the passenger without a valid reduced ticket. Keep a photo identity document available whenever your card or discount category requires it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need permanent residence in Bratislava to receive a discount?
The standard age and student categories are not described as benefits limited to Bratislava permanent residents. You must nevertheless provide the personal details and evidence required for your chosen card and discount category.
Can I use a foreign student card?
A valid international ISIC is accepted for proving student entitlement. Other foreign cards are not automatically listed as sufficient. You may instead need translated enrolment evidence and, depending on the institution, a recognition decision.
Can I buy a discounted season pass before registration is approved?
Do not assume so. Your entitlement must be active on an accepted carrier before a reduced season pass can be issued correctly.
Does a foreign disability card guarantee the ŤZP discount?
No such general guarantee appears in the published rules. The listed evidence is based on Slovak ŤZP or ŤZP-S documentation or equivalent information recorded in an identity document. Confirm acceptance with IDS BK before travelling on a reduced ticket.
